What stood out to you from Sunday’s message?

Summary

Read 1 Kings 18:1-19

Years into the drought and finally the time has come for it to end. God will bring forgiveness and rain. But how? First, Elijah initiates and seeks out Ahab. In his encounters with Obadiah and Ahab we learn about worship and loyalty and the God who is determined to show himself to his people in order to forgive them.

Discussion Questions

1. Obadiah works for Ahab, so how do we know that he “feared the LORD greatly”? How did Obadiah manage this tension? What are some contemporary parallels? Have you been in a similar situation?

2. What are the challenges of following Christ in your job or situation?

3. Compare Elijah and Obadiah and their unique situations. What does each contribute? Which is more difficult? What parallels do you see to ministry today?

4. What do Ahab’s actions (and omissions) in this story tell us about his priorities? What does he value? What does Obadiah value? Elijah?

5. If God saved the lives of prophets both by miracles (Elijah) and ordinary means (the other 100), what does that tell us about limiting God’s work to one or the other? How do we make room for both the miraculous and the ordinary?

6. Why would Ahab think Elijah is the troubler of Israel? What makes Ahab the true troubler of Israel? How would each of these men define trouble? What do we learn from this?
