What stood out to you from Sunday’s message?

Summary

Read 1 Kings 16:29-17:7

The reign of Ahab was some of the darkest, most evil days of Israel’s history. But in these dark days God was not silent, his Word was not failing. He sent Elijah, a nobody from nowhere important to bring his Word to the evil powers of the day. Through Elijah we see the example of an ordinary man who prayed fervently and faithfully obeyed the revealed will of God in hard circumstances.

Discussion Questions

1. What is syncretism? What is idolatry? Where do we see these in our own culture? How are Christians tempted with these?

2. How is the word of the prophet an act of kindness to Ahab? How is his departure for Cherith a judgment on Israel? Can you think of examples of how a hard word from God is a kindness to you?

3. What is the purpose of the drought? What does it prove? How might the people respond?

4. In what way would it have been difficult for Elijah to trust and obey God in this story? Where in life are you called to obey, one step at a time, not knowing where it all leads?

5. Read James 5:13-18. What application does James take from 1 Kings 17? How can we apply this to us?
