At the start of your group take some time to pray and read through Hebrews 12:1-2.
1. What stood out to you personally from the sermon? Were you challenged, convicted, encouraged? Did you discover any new insights or make any new decisions?
2. Hebrews 12:1 refers back to the list of great men and women of faith in Hebrews 11 when it says, ‘we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.’ In what sense are they ‘witnesses’?
3. In light of Hebrews 11-12:1 why is it so important to know the Old Testament as well as the New Testament? See Romans 15:4 & 1 Corinthians 10:11.
4. To run the race effectively Hebrews 12:1 says to lay aside every weight. What are some of the weights (things not considered sin) that might hinder a Christian from running well?
5. To run the race effectively Hebrews 12:1 says to lay aside every sin. What do the following passages have to say about what we are to lay aside (put off or take off) and put on? (Eph. 4:20-32; Col.3:5-17; 1 Peter 2:1; Romans 13:12-14). How do we lay aside sin? How do we put on Christlike character? How does that happen?
6. The sermon focused on Hebrews 12:1-2 and how to run the race of faith and never give up. What additional information does 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 give us about the race?
7. Every race eventually comes to an end. Take some time to talk through the following texts and how they might relate to your life and how you live it (Luke 13:32; Acts 13:25; 20:24; 2 Tim. 4:6-8).
